The Kootenay/Boundary Region of Southeast British Columbia has an unusually high concentration of co-ops and independent credit unions, in comparison with other regions of the country with similar population bases.
Co-operative businesses in the region include 7 independent credit unions, a co-operatively owned and run bakery, a marketing and retail co-op for artisans, two housing co-ops, a multi-stakeholder agricultural co-op, two co-operatively owned community radio stations, a pioneering rural carshare co-operative, and one of the most successful consumer-owned food co-ops in the country.
